Throughout the 1960's there were major changes through technology. These changes not only improved various items, but altered the face of our country. One major change of technology throughout the 1960’s was transportation, where improvements affected the way we traveled in cars, trains, and airplanes. Economic changes opened up new channels for people to spend their money on. With more money, more choices were added into transportation. It wasn't where you traveled, but how you traveled that now made the difference. Carmakers exploded with new models and types of cars for every person in every situation. Businessmen could drive their Ford, while students could buy a General Motors model. The important thing wasn't the car, it was the choice. Speed, flashiness, and craftwork added to the value of the cars that buyers appraised. Where you could only obtain comfort in a locomotive car, you could now have in one of the automobile type. As a result, the train industry declined greatly as the population lacked the need to use the train as their sole mode of transportation. As the economy boomed, the sky opened up as a viable way to travel. Speeding across the clouds while in the comfort of a beautiful airplane became a fashionable, flashy, and fast mode of moving. Various airlines improved their services to draw customers in, PanAm was among the best examples of building a brand focused around the comfort of flying rather than the simple novelty of it. The 1960's forced the population to examine not where they traveled, but how well they did it.
